Developmental Editing
I read and evaluate a manuscript to see what’s working for the reader, in such areas as structure, voice, theme, and writing quality, and what needs further development. Delivered in the form of an editorial evaluation letter plus markup of examples in the manuscript using Word’s comment and track changes tools.
Line Editing
I review every sentence in a manuscript for flow, voice, logic, and paragraph-level organization. Line editing includes some review for spelling, grammar, punctuation, usage, and style but is not as thorough as a copy edit. Delivered in the form of a manuscript marked up with Word’s comment and track changes tools.
Copy Editing
I review and polish every sentence in a manuscript for correct spelling, grammar, punctuation, usage, and style, and I smooth passages that may be confusing to readers. Delivered in the form of a manuscript marked up with Word’s comment and track changes tools
Book Coaching
I meet with writers on a weekly or monthly basis to help them set and accomplish writing goals. We investigate where a work is in the writing process and what challenges the writer faces, and together we set goals and progress toward them through expectation setting, accountability partnership, brainstorming, and high-level text feedback. Coaching is tailored to the unique process of the writer and can take the form of one-on-one meetings, written feedback, goal and deadline setting and follow-up, and much more.
Production Editing & Consulting
For traditional and indie publishers, I assist with project prioritization, schedule and timeline development, selection of and communication with freelance editors and designers, quality assurance, and common-sense consulting on this weird business of making books.
Things I do not do …
Please note: I do not offer proofreading, indexing, print buying, marketing/PR, or distribution services, but I can assist you in arranging them as part of a production editing contract.
